When Moses brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to freedom to worship the true and living God they soon found they needed rules by which to live. In contrast to almost every previous nation their rules were not given by the powerful and wealthy to protect their status - but by God himself. Nor in contrast to these nations was anybody above the law. The resulting rules for living, commonly known as the Ten Commandments, still underpin legal systems throughout the world.
But what can we learn from them today? Are they still relevant in the high-tech consumer-driven multi-cultural world of the 21st century? How should we apply them today? What is an idol? Is war murder? Is it only in court we musn't tell lies? What's wrong with coveting - doesn't it encourage us to work hard? Is putting your parents in a care home honouring them? Can you commit adultery if you have a partner but are not actually married? Are they all equally important? What are the consequences of breaking them? And if we get to heaven by putting our faith in Jesus, do the Ten commandments matter at all?
Join us on Sunday mornings in January 2012 for God's Top Ten, our sermon series on the Ten Commandments. We may not answer all these questions - but we'll give you food for thought.
