Refreshing the vision

A series looking at how we can be refreshed in living out our fiath individually and a a church in all aspects of our lives - in worship, fellowship, discipleship, serving and mission.

God's Top Ten

When Moses brought the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt to freedom to worship the true and living God they soon found they needed rules by which to live. In contrast to almost every previous nation their rules were not given by the powerful and wealthy to protect their status - but by God himself. Nor in contrast to these nations was anybody above the law. The resulting rules for living, commonly known as the Ten Commandments, still underpin legal systems throughout the world.

But what can we learn from them today? Are they still relevant in the high-tech consumer-driven multi-cultural world of the 21st century? How should we apply them today? What is an idol? Is war murder? Is it only in court we musn't tell lies? What's wrong with coveting - doesn't it encourage us to work hard? Is putting your parents in a care home honouring them? Can you commit adultery if you have a partner but are not actually married? Are they all equally important? What are the consequences of breaking them? And if we get to heaven by putting our faith in Jesus, do the Ten commandments matter at all?

Join us on Sunday mornings in January 2012 for God's Top Ten, our sermon series on the Ten Commandments. We may not answer all these questions - but we'll give you food for thought.

A Breath of Fresh Prayer

The Bible is a great source of inspiration for prayer. In this short series we look at four well know prayers - two from the old testament and two from the new testament:

  1. Moses prayer in Exodus 32:11-14
  2. Hannah's prayer in 1 Samuel 9:1-18
  3. The Lord's prayer in Luke 11:1-4
  4. Paul's prayer for the Ephesians in Ephesians 3:14-21

Starts 6 November. Join us in person or listen on-line to breathe some fresh air into your prayer life.

Unwrapping my gifts

Spiritual Gifts are an area of controversy in many churches. Sometimes tensions are close to the surface; sometimes passages in the Bible that teach about the gifts of the Spirit are passed over - lest arguments arise. Some Christians believe that some if not all the gifts that were clearly operative among Jesus' followers after Pentecost died out with the apostles or when the canon of scripture we now know as the Bible was settled. Others believe that the gifts are still being poured out today to give glory of God and to build up the church. If God is offering you a gift to bless his church and encourage you in your faith don't you want to know about it? Join us as we walk through this minefield and read your Bible, pray about it and decide for yourself.

Getting right on side with God

NT Wright writes of St Paul's Epistle (or letter) to the Romans:

...neither a systematic theology nor a summary of Paul's lifework, but it is by common consent his masterpiece. It dwarfs most of his other writings, an Alpine peak towering over hills and villages.

We won't have time to do it justice as we look at the first eight chapters in four weeks; considering what Paul writes about:

  • our need to be righteous with God
  • how we can become righteous through faith in Jesus Christ
  • the blessings of faith in Jesus
  • and what a life lived in the righteousness of Jesus is like.
The Big Picture (NT)

The year 2011 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. Many Churches and other Christian organizations across the UK are using this opportunity to encourage and enable people to engage with the Bible. The sermons in this series give an overview of the story running through the NEW Testament from the birth of Jesus, the Christ, to the birth and growth of the church to Christ's second coming in Revelation. This series is just part of our E100 Challenge - to read as a church 100 key bible passages and delve into them more deeply together on Sundays and in mid-week small group meetings.
